Positioned conveniently on Market Street, this established restaurant has carved out a significant reputation among locals for delivering traditional Thai flavours in a welcoming, casual environment. It’s a favoured spot that consistently draws crowds looking for a satisfying lunch break or a vibrant dinner experience.
Chat Thai distinguishes itself by offering a menu that dives deep into the regional specialities of Thailand, moving beyond the familiar Pad Thai and Green Curry (though those are certainly available and delicious). The restaurant prides itself on maintaining authenticity, presenting a wide variety of dishes that appeal to both seasoned lovers of Thai food and those new to its complexity. As one local patron mentioned, they were "impressed by the wide variety of authentic Thai dishes on the menu." The atmosphere at Chat Thai is casual and lively, creating the perfect backdrop for catching up with friends, having a family meal, or enjoying a quick bite alone. The service is often described as friendly and attentive, contributing to an overall positive dining experience. While high praise is common, the restaurant operates with transparency, acknowledging that the occasional dish might miss the mark, such as one review noting disappointment with a specific grilled chicken dish. However, the general consensus, as encapsulated by another reviewer, is that Chat Thai remains "The best Thai food in Sydney," with specific recommendations like the Fried crispy pork with ginger chili (Moo Krob Prik Khing) being a "must to try." This balance of high praise and the occasional constructive feedback solidifies its status as a real, working, and genuinely popular local favourite.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I recently visited Chat Thai and was impressed by the wide variety of authentic Thai dishes on the menu. The restaurant had a great atmosphere and the service was friendly and attentive. However, I was disappointed with the grilled chicken dish I ordered. It was tasteless and had a slightly unpleasant odor. Despite this, I appreciate the effort put into the presentation and preparation of the dish.Overall, while there were some aspects of the meal that left something to be desired, I still think Chat Thai is a great choice for authentic Thai cuisine in Sydney
February 23 · Zella Keiko BawrThe best Thai food in Sydney, Chat Thai. Fried crispy pork with ginger chili ( Moo Krob Prik Khing) is the must to try.
October 08 · Dragonia TThe food wasn’t great and they do charge an arm and a leg despite the tasteless food. It may very well be that rent along a major CBD street in Chinatown / Thaitown is high, but still. The staff looked tired and demoralised, and it may very well be that Chat Thai had overextended themselves with multiple locations. But as the “main shop” they need to maintain food standards and reputation.
March 22 · Malcolm LeeI am not too sure why the star is so low but I absolutely love this place! The eggplant is so yummy! I will definitely come back again.
September 02 · sleepingtigerDespite of previous reviews i found the duck very tasty. It was definetly not a warm welcome but i got what i paid for. Also had a thai milk tea for the first time and they didnt disappoint. The restaurant has the authentic touch of thai vibe to it. Love it
