Dymocks Cafe Introduce
For individuals across New South Wales seeking a central, comfortable, and truly unique dining experience in the Sydney CBD, **Dymocks Cafe** on the Mezzanine Level at 428 George St offers a refreshing alternative to standard city fare. Operating as a full-service cafe, coffee store, and substantial lunch restaurant, this venue is renowned for its vast and diverse menu, which successfully marries classic cafe offerings with a heartwarming selection of traditional Eastern European comfort food.
The standout feature of Dymocks Cafe is undoubtedly its menu depth and its embrace of authentic, home-style cuisine. While they serve excellent, foundational cafe items—including a great range of **COFFEES** (from a regular cappuccino to the potent piccolo) and an impressive selection of **LOOSE LEAF TEAS**—the food menu is where they shine. Customers with a connection to European cuisine, or simply a desire for hearty, flavourful meals, will find plenty to love.
Their specialty in Eastern European dishes is highly praised by regulars. Offerings like the classic Borsch
(beetroot and vegetable soup), various **DUMPLINGS** (including Chicken or Mixed Meat options), and the comforting **HOT LUNCHES** such as Beef Goulash and Lamb Pilaf are celebrated for their authenticity and quality. One loyal patron specifically noted that the borsch tastes "just like my grandma used to make," highlighting the genuine, nostalgic appeal of the food.
Beyond the specialised fare, the cafe provides extensive options for all three main meals of the day. The **BREAKFAST** menu is rich and satisfying, featuring options from a Smashed Egg Salad on sourdough to a Bagel with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. For midday, the **SAVOURY CREPES** (Lamb Kofta, Chicken, Slow Cooked Beef Mince) and the substantial **BURGERS** offer filling and flavourful choices. They also cater to different dietary needs with **Healthy options** and a variety of **Vegetarian options**, such as the Grilled Pumpkin omelette and Beetroot Borsch.
The atmosphere at Dymocks Cafe is described as both **Casual** and **Cozy**, providing a comfortable and relaxing environment away from the hustle of George Street. It's a highly popular spot for **Breakfast** and **Lunch**, and its amenities, including the ability to reserve a table and access to a **Restroom**, make it a preferred location for **Solo dining** and for those who need a spot **Good for working on a laptop**.
While the food quality and atmosphere are consistently high, it is important to note that, as in any busy service environment, occasional lapses in service can occur. One customer review highlighted a perceived inconsistency in table service regarding water, which underscores the value of clear communication between patrons and staff. However, the cafe offers **Table service** and **Accepts reservations**, indicating a structure built for attentive dining.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Dymocks Café is our favourite place to go in Sydney CBD, I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve been there. They offer a wide range of comfort food that takes me straight back to my Eastern European childhood. The borsch tastes just like my grandma used to make, and my favourites are the beef goulash, pirozhki with cabbage, and the vanilla slice (the best in the city!). I also love that they regularly update the menu with new dishes while keeping their signature meals consistently delicious.
September 23 · K SReally poor service. I sat there and noticed that everyone who came in after me had water and glasses brought to their table, except me. At first I thought it was just a mistake, so I waited. After nearly 30 minutes, I asked if I could have some water, and the server said, “It’s self-serve over there.”If that’s the case, why was everyone else served at their tables? Was I treated differently because of how I look? I truly hope not, but that’s how it felt.
August 11 · Victoria CaoAmazing place! I bought some books and visited a nearby cafe. They served beautiful, salads and pies. The menu and cuisine were great, and everything tasted wonderful. The service was also fantastic.Just a friendly reminder: please make sure to leave by 5 pm, as the place is closing down at that time.
July 27 · Diana NMy mother in law brought me here for lunch. She had the Salmon Croissant and I had the Ham and Cheese Croissant. We also took home some tirimisu and a slice of orange cake.Lunch was delicious as was the tirimisu. The orange cake, however, was very dry and crumbly.Service was polite and attentive.Food came out at a somewhat reasonable time, considering they were only croissants.Would come again.Menu as of this date provided.
July 02 · Theresa SarmientoWe’re never expecting this level of delicious food in this book store. Where we don’t really have to wait, the seated area is bit small to be honest. We order a ricotta cheese cake and brunch here. The cheeses cake is really creamy and amazing. Brunch also good. Can’t love this place more. If u are here alone or with family would be anyway a good choice to have a coffee or a lunch break.
